The Royal Champion is a spear-throwing hero who goes straight for defenses, jumps over walls and hits both ground and air targets. She unlocks at Town Hall 13 when the Hero Hall reaches level 7 and maxes at level 55 at Town Hall 18. Her original Seeking Shield ability is now one of seven pieces of Hero Equipment she can choose from.
How the Royal Champion works
She targets defenses first and skips every other building while any defense is left. She doesn’t count the Clan Castle as a defense, but she does count an activated Town Hall weapon. Unlike other defense-only units, she fights back: if a defending hero, Clan Castle troops or trap Skeletons engage her or a nearby troop, she turns on them before resuming her hunt.
She throws her spear every 1.2 seconds from 3 tiles away and can hit ground and air. She walks at speed 24 and hops walls like a Hog Rider or Headhunter. Her damage is high and her health is moderate, so she’s best used as a damage dealer that something else protects.
Like every hero she has one ability per battle that heals her (more every five levels) and triggers her active equipment. It fires automatically if she’s about to be knocked out, unless you switch that off in settings, and since the Town Hall 16 update an auto-triggered Seeking Shield is thrown instantly instead of being lost mid-animation.
On defense she guards a Hero Banner and uses no equipment. Since November 2024 there is no Royal Champion Altar, and since March 2025 she doesn’t need to regenerate between battles.

She starts at level 1 with 340 damage per second and 2,508 hitpoints. Level 2 costs 10,000 Dark Elixir and 4 hours; level 55 costs 450,000 Dark Elixir and 8 days, before Gold Pass discounts.
Royal Champion equipment
When Hero Equipment arrived on December 12, 2023, her Seeking Shield ability became two pieces, the Seeking Shield and the Royal Gem. She equips two pieces per attack. Equipment is unlocked and upgraded at the Blacksmith with Ore; Common pieces max at level 18 and Epic pieces at level 27.

The Hero Journey track in the Hero Hall has handed out Epic Equipment since June 2026 as well. Strong pairings:
- Haste Vial with Hog Rider Puppet, the all-round choice. She goes invisible, the Hogs tank, and her attack speed spikes. Giant Bombs and splash defenses that wipe the Hogs are its weak point.
- Seeking Shield with Rocket Spear: clear nearby defenses, then snipe ones deep in the base from long range.
- Hog Rider Puppet with Royal Gem for a long-lasting Royal Champion Charge.
- Electro Boots with the Hog Rider Puppet against swarms, or with the Haste Vial for fast defense kills in a charge backed by the Spirit Fox and Invisibility Spells.
How to use the Royal Champion
- Send her behind a tank or with the main pack. Deployed behind the Barbarian King, she kills the defenses that are busy with him. In Hybrid attacks (Hog Riders and Miners), the pack tanks for her while she takes out defenses and protects them from air Clan Castle troops.
- Deploy her a bit later than you think. She is most useful when the main army is losing steam against the back defenses; going in first usually gets her killed. A Siege Barracks full of Hog Riders makes a good escort.
- Use the Seeking Shield to build funnels. It one-shots weak defenses like Mortars and Hidden Teslas, which makes a “sui Champion” on the edge of the base a cheap way to open a path.
- Royal Champion Walk: like a Queen Walk, with Healers or Druids behind her. Her shorter range pulls Healers closer to Air Defenses, so plan for that. Swapping the Healers for Invisibility Spells turns it into a Royal Champion Charge.
- Against a lone single-target Inferno Tower blocking a good entry, an Earthquake Spell and two Lightning Spells set it up for her Seeking Shield to finish.
Best pets for the Royal Champion
Pets come from the Pet House from Town Hall 14.
- L.A.S.S.I (Town Hall 14) is a popular pick: it also jumps walls, keeps up with her, and walks in front to take hits.
- Diggy (Town Hall 15) stuns the defenses she’s going after, though burrowing means he can’t shield her.
- The Spirit Fox (Town Hall 16) keeps turning her invisible at intervals and jumps walls to stay with her.
- The Phoenix (Town Hall 15) buys her a second life, which helps a hero with modest health.
The Angry Jelly adds little, since she already targets defenses, and the slow Unicorn tends to fall behind her.
Defending against the Royal Champion
- Cover likely entry points with high-damage defenses; her health won’t last long under focused fire.
- Put cheap defenses such as Cannons, Mortars and Archer Towers where they’ll soak a Seeking Shield instead of your best ones.
- Use Skeleton Traps near a single-target Inferno Tower. Her slow throws make Skeletons a long distraction, unless she carries the Rocket Spear and outranges both.
- Expect Hog Riders with her, from a Siege Barracks or the Hog Rider Puppet, and cover outer defenses with splash and traps.
- When attacking a defending Champion, a Poison Spell slows her already slow attacks; high-damage troops or several Lightning Spells finish her.
