Updated for Town Hall 18 (October 2026).
Town Hall 1 is where every Clash of Clans account starts: one Cannon, one of each resource building, a single Army Camp and a Barracks. The upgrade to Town Hall 2 costs 1,000 Gold and takes 10 seconds, so TH1 is a short tutorial stage rather than a level you stay at. This guide covers what you have at TH1, the max levels, what to upgrade first and what is different for new players in 2026.
What Town Hall 1 gives you
You do not unlock anything at TH1 so much as start with it. The game hands you a small village and walks you through the first builds.
| Building | Number at TH1 | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Cannon | 1 | Ground-only defense, range 9 tiles. A second Cannon comes at TH2. |
| Gold Mine | 1 | Produces Gold over time. |
| Elixir Collector | 1 | Produces Elixir over time. |
| Gold Storage | 1 | Holds 1,500 Gold at level 1. |
| Elixir Storage | 1 | Holds 1,500 Elixir at level 1. |
| Army Camp | 1 | 20 housing space at level 1. |
| Barracks | 1 | Trains Barbarians, then Archers at level 2. |
| Builder’s Hut | 2 of 5 | One is pre-built, the second comes during the tutorial. Huts 3 to 5 cost 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Gems. |
| Clan Castle | Ruined | Rebuilding costs 10,000 Elixir, which you can only store from TH3. |
There are no traps, Walls, spells, heroes or pets at Town Hall 1. The Town Hall itself has 400 hitpoints and holds up to 1,000 Gold and 1,000 Elixir on top of your storages.
Max levels at Town Hall 1
| Building or unit | Max level at TH1 | What that level gives |
|---|---|---|
| Cannon | 2 | 10 damage per second, 360 hitpoints |
| Gold Mine and Elixir Collector | 2 | 400 per hour, holds 2,000 |
| Gold Storage and Elixir Storage | 1 | 1,500 each |
| Army Camp | 1 | 20 housing space |
| Barracks | 2 | Barbarian and Archer |
| Barbarian, Archer | 1 | No Laboratory until TH3 |
The game data lists Barracks level 3 (the Giant) at Town Hall 1, but you cannot actually reach it before Town Hall 2, so plan on Giants at TH2.
Upgrade order at Town Hall 1
- Barracks to level 2. Archers are your first ranged troop and make the early Goblin campaign maps much easier than Barbarians alone.
- Gold Mine and Elixir Collector to level 2. Doubling production is cheap and they keep paying while you play.
- Cannon to level 2. It is your only defense, and the upgrade is quick.
- Town Hall 2. Your storages and the Town Hall together hold exactly 2,500 Gold at TH1, and the upgrade needs 1,000, so you can start it as soon as the cheap upgrades are running.
Do not spend Gems speeding anything up here. You start with 250 Gems, and the third Builder’s Hut costs 500. Clearing obstacles such as trees and rocks drops Gems, and since March 2025 Villagers clear obstacles for you without tying up a Builder.
Armies that work at Town Hall 1
With 20 housing space and two troop types, your army is a handful of Barbarians and Archers. Barbarians take one housing space each and fight in melee; Archers also take one space but shoot from 3.5 tiles, so they can hit buildings from behind your Barbarians. A split such as 10 of each works for the first Single Player campaign levels, which are your only attack option at TH1. Regular multiplayer Battles open at Town Hall 2.
Training is free and instant. Supercell removed the Elixir cost of training in June 2022 and the training time in March 2025, so you can attack, lose your army and go again right away.
Base building at Town Hall 1
With one Cannon there is not much to design. Put the Cannon next to your storages so its 9-tile range covers them and the Town Hall, and leave the Army Camp and Builder’s Huts toward the edges where they soak up attacking troops. Spend your effort on getting to TH2, where Walls and the Archer Tower make layout start to matter.
What is different for new players in 2025-26
If you read an older guide, several things it says are no longer true:
- Troops, spells and siege machines train instantly and cost nothing to train. Heroes no longer need to regenerate after a battle either.
- The Barbarian King and the Hero Hall now unlock at Town Hall 4 instead of TH7 (May 26, 2026 update).
- New accounts reach the Builder Base at Town Hall 6 by repairing the Boat. Older guides say TH4, which only applies to older accounts.
- The Starter Pass was retired in August 2026. Season Challenges and the Gold Pass now start at Town Hall 3, with the change rolling out as a test from September 2026.
Before you upgrade to Town Hall 2
- Barracks at level 2 so Archers are unlocked.
- Upgrade work queued on both Builders so neither sits idle during the 10-second Town Hall upgrade.
- 1,000 Gold in storage.
- Gems saved, not spent, toward the third Builder’s Hut.
Town Hall 1 FAQ

The Town Hall 2 upgrade takes 10 seconds and costs 1,000 Gold. Once you have that much Gold, nothing else holds you at TH1.
Can I attack other players at Town Hall 1?
No. Regular Battles against other players start at Town Hall 2. At TH1 you attack the Goblin villages in the Single Player campaign.
How many builders do I get at Town Hall 1?
Two. The first Builder’s Hut is already standing and the tutorial gives you the second. The other three cost 500, 1,000 and 2,000 Gems.
What are the max levels at Town Hall 1?
Cannon 2, Gold Mine and Elixir Collector 2, both storages 1, Army Camp 1 and Barracks 2 in practice. Troops stay at level 1 until the Laboratory arrives at TH3. The max levels page has every Town Hall in one place.
